Strengthening Custodial Operations with G4S Partnership

Published: 4 Mar 2025

In an important step to provide relief and support to custodial operations, the Northern Territory Department of Corrections has entered into a partnership with G4S, a leader in custodial services. This was the outcome of a rapid, robust and thorough procurement process to engage an external supplier for roles outside of our prisons.

A key element of the agreement is G4S’s commitment to employing qualified staff who hold a Certificate III in Correctional Practice—or a higher or equivalent qualification as determined by the Commissioner—ensuring their team integrates smoothly into our operations.

The phased partnership will initially focus on court custody and escort duties, allowing our corrections officers to return to their primary custodial roles. The first cohort of G4S staff is expected to take the oath and commence induction within weeks.

To support this transition, a team from G4S will arrive in Darwin this week to work closely with our executive team to align procedures and operating practices. As the partnership progresses, the aim is to roll out additional services services such as medical escorts and prisoner transfers, while ensuring a smooth transition and minimal disruptions

This is a collaborative effort to co-design services that contribute to a modern, efficient, and responsive custodial and offender management system.
