International Women's Day at HYDC

Published: 2 Apr 2025

The young people at Holtze Youth Detention Centre celebrated International Women’s Day with activities sparking creativity, reflection, and connection, providing an opportunity to show appreciation for the important women in their lives.

The young people received art supplies, allowing them to decorate cards and write messages to a strong woman they appreciate. Whether directed to a mother, aunty, or youth justice officer, the activity helped reinforce the value of expressing gratitude and maintaining positive relationships.

A highlight of the day was when proud Larrakia woman and guest speaker Nicole Brown visited the centre. Nicole is a social activist dedicated to advancing Australia’s First Nations people. Her visit to the centre on International Women’s Day was especially powerful, as she shared her knowledge, resilience, and passion.

While creating their art pieces, the young people spoke to Nicole about the power of positive influences and how to embrace their strengths. They discussed the importance of finding good role models and creating opportunities for themselves and their communities.

The celebration also highlighted the positive impact of staff members on the young people, who received letters of appreciation from the participants, recognising their ongoing support.

The day was a meaningful way for the young people to get creative, connect with others and most importantly, celebrate the women who inspire them.
