Celebrating a career of service: David Gordon awarded Australian Corrections Medal

Published: 12 Sep 2025

Last Friday, David Gordon, general manager of the Darwin Correctional Centre, was formally presented with the Australian Corrections Medal (ACM) by the Administrator of the Northern Territory, recognising more than four decades of distinguished service in correctional services.

The ACM is one of the highest honours for professionals in the corrections field, awarded to operational staff who demonstrate exceptional leadership, commitment, and contribution to the safety and rehabilitation of offenders. Only one recipient is selected from the Northern Territory each year.

Mr Gordon’s career began in 1982 as a correctional officer in New South Wales. Over 43 years, he has served across multiple states and jurisdictions, advancing through roles that included senior inspector with the Office of the Chief Inspector, deputy general manager at Palen Creek Correctional Centre, and now general manager of the Darwin Correctional Precinct.

His work has spanned custodial facilities, community corrections, offender management programs, and high-level governance and reform. Colleagues describe him as an “authentic leader” whose approach is both professional and compassionate, balancing accountability with cultural sensitivity.

On receiving the medal, Mr Gordon joins a select group of corrections professionals nationwide whose service has left a lasting impact. He is now entitled to use the post-nominals ACM after his name, a permanent acknowledgement of his contribution to the corrections field.

Mr Gordon’s recognition is not only a reflection of his individual excellence but also a proud moment for all of us at NT Correctional Services. It highlights the professionalism, dedication, and commitment to service that defines our department.

Congratulations, your leadership and dedication inspire us all.
