Youth Justice Advisory Committee
Under Part 13 of the Youth Justice Act 2005, the Youth Justice Advisory Committee (YJAC) provides advice to the Minister responsible for Youth Justice on issues relevant to the administration of Youth Justice in the Northern Territory. YJAC is a statutory body comprising Government, non-government, and community representatives.
As set out in section 204 of the Act, the functions of the YJAC are:
- monitors and evaluates the administration and operation of the Act.
- to advise the Minister on issues relevant to the administration of Youth Justice, including the planning, development, integration and implementation of government policies and programs concerning youth.
- to collect, analyse and provide to the Minister information relating to issues and policies concerning Youth Justice.
- any other functions imposed by the Act, and
- any other functions as directed by the Minister.
The Department of Corrections provides secretariat support to YJAC.
Expression of interest
The Youth Justice Advisory Committee is seeking Expressions of Interest for a new member to the Youth Justice Advisory Committee (YJAC).
The YJAC is statutory advisory body which operates under Part 13 (sections 202 to 213) of the Youth Justice Act 2005 (The Act) to provide independent advice to the Minister responsible for Youth Justice.
The YJAC is seeking to recruit a member under Section 206(2) (h) of the Act from the following representatives:
- an Aboriginal representative;
- a member under 25 years of age;
- a member who has lived experience in the youth justice system; and/or
- a member from a remote community.
All members must be Northern Territory residents.
