Residential Youth Justice Facilities
The Northern Territory Government is addressing youth crime and keeping offenders accountable through the immediate development of three new residential youth justice facilities.
Locations
These three facilities will offer an innovative way to curb youth offending, support victims and keep offenders accountable for their behaviour.
The residential youth justice facilities will be located in:
- Darwin,
- Tennant Creek and
- Alice Springs.
Another facility will be established in Katherine in late 2024.
Combined services
Territory Families, Housing and Communities is working with the Department of Education and other key stakeholders and service providers to ensure these facilities are up and running by the middle of the year.
We know that very few young people are doing the wrong thing. Where these young people find themselves in the youth justice system, these new residential facilities will help ensure young people can access the programs they need to put them on a path of meaningful change.
The residential youth justice facilities will:
- provide education and training opportunities to assist young people transition into work and
- provide them with the support they need to learn and be positive members of our community.
These facilities will provide courts with more options for sentencing young people to a supervised and structured program.
