New women’s prison in Alice Springs marks major milestone

Published: 27 Feb 2026

The Department of Corrections has opened the first-ever women’s prison in Alice Springs, ensuring women have a facility separate to male prisoners, improving safety and rehabilitation outcomes.

The facility will accommodate sentenced and remand prisoners, providing a dedicated environment for women-specific programs and case management.

Stage one of the project has delivered 38 beds. The 95-bed multi-classification facility is expected to be complete by the end of April 2026.

The Hon Gerard Maley MLA, Minister for Corrections said the new facility is a key part of the Corrections Infrastructure Masterplan and the NT Government’s crime reduction strategy.

'We are investing in infrastructure that ensures women are accommodated in environments designed around their needs, with better access to education, training and meaningful work opportunities - helping to break the cycle of reoffending and reduce crime across the Territory.'

The milestone comes after the opening of Sector 11, a dedicated women’s prison in Darwin last month.
