New supported accommodation for women in Alice Springs

Published: 29 Jan 2026

The Department of Corrections has partnered with the Salvation Army to deliver the first bail supported accommodation program dedicated to women in Alice Springs.

The new 10-bed Open House Women’s facility was formally opened on 22 January 2026 by the Minister for Corrections Gerard Maley, with Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Akeyulerre Aboriginal Corporation.

The bail supported accommodation program has been designed specifically for Aboriginal women to help overcome barriers to housing for those on bail or parole, aiming to reduce the number of women in custody and help them transition into stable housing.

Participants will receive 24/7 supervision, individual case management, health and wellbeing support, with access to a Family and Domestic Violence Coordinator.

Since 2023, bail supported accommodation programs have helped hundreds of participants reconnect with their families and communities, saving more than 37,000 bed nights in NT prisons.

The Open House Women’s Program builds on this success, reflecting our commitment to delivering correctional services that promote accountability and rehabilitation to reduce reoffending.
