First General Offender’s Program in Yuendumu
Published: 19 Dec 2024
Southern Tanami Kurdiji Indigenous Corporation (STKIC) is proud to share the remarkable success of our First General Offender’s (GOP) Program, held in Yuendumu throughout 2024.
This groundbreaking program, which aimed to reduce reoffending and support positive behavioural change, saw Aboriginal male participants successfully complete the program. These men graduated the program on 18th December 2024, marking a significant achievement in their personal journeys toward positive change.
Over the course of 13 weeks, the participants committed to an intensive program designed to address the underlying issues contributing to offending behaviour. Facilitated by Julie Watson, the program was tailored to meet the unique needs of the men in the community, providing them with the tools and strategies to make lasting positive changes in their lives. As part of their journey, each participant developed a Stay Strong Plan, a personalised roadmap to support them in avoiding future offences and building healthier, more positive lifestyles.
This success is a direct result of the strong community collaboration that supported the program. Key partners, including the Northern Territory Government, Community Corrections - Nicole & Mitch, Yuendumu Police - Jason & Kane, Yuendumu Health Service – Sally & Staff, AOD Workers - Susan Lin , Remote Sexual Health Workers – Kay & Morris, Men's Health Workers - Kumar & Samson, Services Australia - Abby, Karen & Carol, and the Community Development Program (CDP) - Heath, National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) - Sharron, Patrick & Eddie, all played vital roles in ensuring the program’s success. Additionally, the contributions of Community Elders and local community members were invaluable in ensuring the program was culturally relevant and impactful.
We are incredibly proud of the men who graduated from the program and the progress they have made. Their achievements are a testament to their dedication and determination to create better futures for themselves and their community. As a community, we stand behind them, supporting their continued journey towards a positive, reoffending-free future.
The success of the GOP Program in Yuendumu is a monumental step forward in fostering change and building a safer, stronger community. We look forward to expanding our efforts and supporting more individuals in their journey toward transformation throughout 2025 and beyond. Congratulations to all the participants, facilitators, and supporters who made this program an incredible success. We are all proud of each and every one of you!
