The Yothu Yindi Foundation enlisted the support of 6 prisoners from Datjala Work Camp (DWC) to help prepare GARMA Festival 2024.
The effort and contribution from prisoners commenced months in advance where the team was tasked with clearing the premise of excess rubbish, rocks, leaves and debris - resulting in 220 truckloads.
New pathways were constructed and existing ones were meticulously cleaned. The crew, along with dedicated volunteers, erected approximately 3,000 tents for incoming guests. Additionally, extensive thatching took place with the crew working hard days out from the opening.
The leader of the volunteer team emphasized that this was the first year they had successfully completed this task, and acknowledged the indispensable contribution of the Datjala Crew.
“The public's response was one of astonishment and appreciation for the substantial efforts made by our organisation and it elicited exceptional support and feedback in relation to our program.” – Officer in Charge, Melissa Peterson
