Information for the media
This page contains useful information for journalists. Media requests for information are considered under the Information Act 2002. Corrections’ Media team will endeavour to get back to you as soon as practicable on any request. While the Media team will handle a large majority of media requests, some may be handled by the Ministerial Services team.
For every request, please be as specific as you can and include how you prefer to receive the information, for example as a transcript. If you are unsure about your request, please email our Communications team about what you want to know and they will be able to help.

After hours
We will do our best to help with after hours questions but it is not always possible to provide information or spokespeople outside of business hours, particularly during weekends or public holidays.
Corrections can answer queries that are about the management of custodial sentences (imprisonment and home detention) and non-custodial sentences and orders (supervision, community work and parole) imposed by the Courts.
We can answer questions about:
- statistics on the prison population and sentences or orders
- information on types of sentences or orders
- incidents in prison - for example prison escapes or deaths in custody
- rehabilitation programmes.
We do not usually provide comment about individual offenders as we operate in accordance with a number of legislations, including the Information Act 2002.
Written approval must be obtained from the General Manager of the custodial facility before any filming can take place.
Prisoner privacy
Unless written consent is first obtained, no offender is to be identified in any way.
Offenders whose privacy is breached have the statutory right to take legal action against the media.
What you cannot identify at the prison
You must not identify:
- Corrections staff who do not wish to be identified
- Specific security measures at the institution.
You cannot photograph or film keys, security cameras, security systems, locks or computer systems. This will be discussed with you further at the prison.
To film, photograph or interview a prisoner you need to make a request in writing to the Director, Media and Communications.
Your request should include:
- the nature and purpose of your request
- how the information or images you gather will be used
- who you want to speak to
- the focus of your questions
- the date and time when you want to have access to both the prison and prisoners
- who will be coming to the prison on the day.
